The extraordinary beginnings of Canny Co
Canny Co all began with the invention of Brian Smith, a horseman in the Scottish Highlands. He specially created a slip-line collar for a stallion named Wallace, who found his usual collars too painful to wear.
Realizing that it could also help dog owners who were having difficulty training their pets, he created a version for dogs and began touring Scotland to demonstrate the Canny Collar.
Since then, the company has helped owners and training groups around the world improve the walking experience of their pets and rescues alike.
And as the demand grew, Canny Co decided to include QR codes on product packaging to direct customers to instructional videos on how to use its new equipment.
How Canny Co uses QR codes to improve product experience

We had the chance to speak with Sean McElherron, Managing Director of The Canny Company and Director of CannyCo America, to learn how they came to know QR TIGER and trust it to help them achieve their goal of improving dog care and training.
Tell us briefly about your company. What makes your brand or service unique?
“We sell a limited range of dog training products, including our flagship product, the Canny Collar, to help owners train their dogs not to pull on [the] lead. The Canny Collar is patented and sold in the UK, USA, Australia, and Europe.”
Why did you decide to use QR codes, and what made you choose this approach for your campaign or event?
“We needed QR codes on our packaging to begin with, to link to a video on how to fit and use the Canny Collar. But now we can see many practical applications for our codes, and so have now added them to other products, and we intend to also use them for offers, discounts, etc.”
How has QR TIGER helped your company achieve its goals?
“It has helped us initially by helping potential customers at [the] point of purchase overcome any initial objections regarding [the] difficulty of fit and use of our main product.”
What key insights or learnings did you gain from using QR TIGER in your campaign?
“The fact that so many people have scanned the code has meant that we realized how much our customers needed this information. By now providing it on all packaging with a link to a fitting and using video, this will increase uptake and reduce product returns.”
Would you recommend QR TIGER to other businesses? Why?
“Absolutely. Being able to scan a code on a mobile phone at [the] point of purchase is invaluable in giving customers the information they need to make the purchase.”
