Scheduled for launch in the fiscal year 2025, cashless payments are steadily progressing with an innovative QR code for payment services.

Japan’s government and Southeast Asian countries are poised to eliminate the hassle of exchanging currency for tourists

This Japan-ASEAN joint QR code payment forward-thinking initiative is set to revolutionize travel experiences. 

Spearheaded by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the wheels of this project are turning fast. 

Behind the scenes, METI has already held discussions with Southeast Asian governments and central banks in countries such as Indonesia and Cambodia, introducing a new era of hassle-free cashless transactions. 

At the heart of this Japan and ASEAN QR code payment collaboration lies a shared vision to harness the transformative power of digitalization. This tackles the hurdle of currency exchange— a pain point for both tourists and business owners. 

This initiative seeks to standardize QR code systems that connect domestic and international services, allowing travelers to make purchases using their home countries’ payment methods.

Currently, various businesses in Japan offer payment services like Paypay and Rakuten Pay. However, users can only maximize this payment channel for registered services. 

That is where this project takes center stage— paving a new payment system called JPQR, a Japan QR code payment method that enables consumers to make transactions from any payment service by scanning the QR code. 

Imagine a future where Japanese tourists in Vietnam effortlessly settle their bills at a local restaurant with a simple scan of their smart device. This saves the hassle of looking for money changers. 

This isn’t just a futuristic dream; Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is rolling up its sleeves to make this concept a reality, and discussions are ongoing with Southeast Asian countries to iron out the details. 

By 2024, a unified payment system is expected to be up and running, paving the way for the complete QR code integration by 2025.

Japan to build a QR code payment system as early as this year

The groundwork for this partnership was laid in 2022 when five ASEAN nations – Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines signed a memorandum of understanding on a unified integration of a QR code for payment system. 

Several countries have even commenced this adoption. Nikkei Asia stated in an article:

“In Thailand, the system is overseen by the central bank and operated by a business funded by major banks. Indonesia also has a standardized system regulated by the central bank, and payment service providers are required to follow its rules.” 

With this effort, tourists can expect a seamless payment experience defined by simplicity, speed, and security with immense potential for tourism and regional economic exchange. 

Moreover, this move by Japan aims to harness technological advancements like QR code generator software to drive economic growth and foster stronger regional bonds regarding security and data use.
