QR codes around the world

Contact tracing and tracking of QR codes

As contact tracing is the only available solution to combat the Coronavirus pandemic, various nations have implemented the use of QR codes in the approach to minimize strain on health facilities as well as further improve accuracy and effectiveness.

Countries like New Zealand and Singapore implemented this by having QR codes in business establishments and taxis to create a record of individuals.

Other nations like Qatar and China took a more general approach by using QR codes to track and limit the movement of their people.

Each individual is issued with a unique QR code which will be color-coded based on their travel history and health status.

Green holders can roam freely, while red and other colored QR codes will have certain roaming limitations.

How QR codes are primarily used in many countries

Contactless payments and donations

Different countries have taken an approach to integrate QR codes into everyday tasks to limit physical contact, and the major application is on payments.

QR code statistics show that businesses in the United States of America have seen a relevant spike in contactless payments, slowly turning it into the new standard.

Northern Ireland is also not one to the trail from the initiative, even implementing their own unique twist for contactless shopping.

Even the standard procedures for donations have been revolutionized by QR codes.

In other countries, such as Malaysia and the Philippines, various digital payment applications are starting to support QR code scanning as they partner with non-government organizations that are at the front against the pandemic.

The new feature allows for effortless and immediate donations to preferred groups with the scan of a QR code.

Convenient hands-free passes

Some nations have ventured into more unusual and unique approaches.

For example, France digitally transformed their confinement passes, converting them to QR codes that can be easily scanned and checked without any physical contact.

Indonesia, on the other hand, developed an app where individuals can get evaluated and secure a country QR code which serves as their pass into health facilities for immediate COVID-19 testing.

While a lot of countries and cities have adopted the technology, the approaches are not without flaws.

Along the way, governments surpassed one hurdle after another.

Nevertheless, the benefits outweigh the hardships, causing nations to continuously integrate QR codes into more applications in an effort to further transition to normalcy without risking public safety.
