Kolkata Metro QR Codes Bring Back Same-Day Ticketing

Kolkata Metro QR Codes Bring Back Same-Day Ticketing

INDIA — With the return of the Kolkata Metro QR code ticketing facility, the iconic railway system takes a meaningful step toward smarter and more convenient public transport.

The Kolkata Metro has served as a vital lifeline for millions of commuters in the city. However, passengers have often raised concerns about frequent power outages and, most importantly, overcrowding.

To reduce long queues and save time for daily commuters and travellers, the metro authority has reopened the same-day ticketing facility, powered by an advanced QR code generator.

From shorter queues to smoother station entry, the updated QR code ticket system promises to reshape the commuting experience at all metro routes.

The return of QR code-based same-day ticketing

The same-day ticketing facility had been a regular part of the metro rail until about 15 years ago, when it was suspended following the phase-out of magnetic strip ticketing.

As part of an experimental trial, the facility is making its return; this time replacing the magnetic strips with an advanced QR code generator for onward and return ticket QR codes.

S S Kannan, the Chief Public Relations Officer for the Kolkata Metro, said that the ticket with QR code will help save time and make travel across metro corridors easier, as passengers won’t need to buy a separate return ticket.

The ticket QR code also works seamlessly with Metro’s existing systems, including online booking and digital payment support. This allows commuters to buy one ticket for multiple trips in one transaction.

Kolkata Metro’s overcrowding issues

According to officials, an estimated 982,000 passengers used various metro lines during Durga Puja on September 27, 2025, breaking their previous record of over 961,000 riders on October 9, 2024.

Due to numerous complaints from commuters, the Kolkata Metro rail system began encouraging the use of smart cards and online ticket bookings to manage its crowded stations.

However, despite the Kolkata Metro’s push, it became clear that many passengers still wanted the return of same-day tickets, which ultimately led to the revival of the metro ticket QR code facility.

Kolkata Metro QR code as the smart solution

Like other metro systems around the world that use QR codes for transportation and travel, the Kolkata Metro uses them for entry and exit.

The return facility has a QR code ticket generator that creates and prints a paper QR code for commuters to scan at the gates.

This same QR code must be scanned with a QR code ticket scanner at the metro when returning from the destination, reducing wait times and congestion by using a single ticket for same-day returns.

Authorities remind commuters and travellers that the Kolkata Metro QR code ticket is valid only on the date printed, so passengers must take care not to damage or lose it to avoid having to buy another ticket.

Despite still being in its experimental phase, the facility covers all major corridors, including Dakshineswar Sahid Khudiram, Howrah Maidan, Salt Lake Sector V, and Noapara Jai Hind Bimanbandar, making it easy to access.

A sustainable solution to the metro congestion problem

The creation of the Kolkata Metro QR code and the return of same-day ticketing reflect a broader effort to modernize public transport and improve the daily commute experience.

Should the trial run go well, this ticketing generator could make the metro system more efficient to navigate, reducing passenger wait times and smoothing out journeys.

As more commuters experience the ease of using a single paper ticket with a QR code for same-day returns, all eyes will be on Kolkata Metro to see if this upgrade truly improves urban transit.Brands using QR codes
