Philippines Launches 10-Peso ASEAN Commemorative Coin With QR Code
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) released the 10-peso ASEAN commemorative coin with an engraved QR code, marking the Philippines’ chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2026.
BSP Governor Eli Remolona Jr. led the turnover ceremony at Malacañang Palace on November 26, 2025, presenting the coin to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Nationwide circulation followed in January 2026, with 10 million pieces minted for public use.

ASEAN 10 peso coin QR code design features
The front side of the coin retains the standard New Generation Currency ₱10 design featuring Apolinario Mabini.
The reverse side of the new 10-peso coin 2026 displays the official ASEAN 2026 logo, the BSP seal, and a scannable QR code in place of the usual kapa-kapa flower (Medinilla magnifica).
QR codes are typically generated with QR code generator software, enabling quick access to online information with a simple scan.
The ASEAN 10-peso coin 2026 design features four cultural elements: a balangay boat, woven patterns, waves, and rice stalks. The design reflects the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together”.
When scanned, the QR code directs users to the central bank website, which then links to the official ASEAN 2026 hosting page.
ASEAN coin enters circulation
The 10-peso ASEAN coin is legal tender and circulates alongside existing 10-peso coins from the New Generation Currency series and earlier BSP Coin Series.
Distribution has reached major regions. Fresh batches recently arrived in Zamboanga (Mindanao area) as part of the nationwide rollout, according to the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).
The ASEAN 10-peso coin value retains its face value of ₱10 for regular transactions.
BSP Zamboanga Area Director Zarinah S. Aligsao describes the design as a first for Philippine currency.
“For the first time, tradition meets technology with an integrated QR code, reflecting our nation’s drive toward a digital future”, Aligsao said.
The Philippines assumed the ASEAN chair role on January 1, 2026, after Myanmar declined its scheduled turn. The country last hosted the regional summit in 2017.
Collectors, banks, and netizens react
Photos of the coin spread across social media and numismatic platforms within days of the launch. Numismatic site, Numista, has already cataloged the piece for global collectors.
Online reactions varied. Discussions on the 10-peso ASEAN coin QR code on Reddit highlighted mixed views on usability and design. Some users welcomed the use of QR codes on currency.
Others raised practical concerns about the long-term reliability of scans, given the potential wear and surface damage over time. Some raised security concerns, noting the risk of counterfeit coins with fake QR codes that redirect users to malicious websites.
Several financial institutions also shared social media posts on the launch. OFBank, Landbank, and rural banks posted updates on Facebook and Instagram highlighting the coin’s release.
Some collectors asked whether the ASEAN 10-peso coin is rare, while others focused on its circulation status rather than collectibility.
Aligsao addressed the dual function in a follow-up statement.
“More than just a collector’s item, this legal tender embodies the spirit of regional unity and our goal of a seamless, tech-forward Southeast Asia”, she said.
What comes next
The ASEAN 10-peso coin QR code will remain in circulation throughout 2026 and beyond. BSP has not announced additional QR-enabled coin releases.
The Philippines will hand over the ASEAN chairmanship in 2027, while the coin continues to circulate as legal tender.
This reflects the growing use of QR technology beyond payments and marketing. By placing a QR code on national currency, BSP highlights its expanding role in public communication and digital access initiatives.
The ASEAN coin rollout marks a shift in the QR code industry. QR adoption now extends to permanent, government-issued items, not just temporary marketing assets.
